Exploring Adaptations and Designing Beaks!

This week in STEM, the 3/4 class continued exploring how organisms evolve and adapt to their environments. We discussed natural selection and gene mutations as drivers of evolution, and then looked at how some organisms in our own backyard have adapted to live in their environment. The students found examples of structural and behavioral adaptations… Read more Exploring Adaptations and Designing Beaks!

Art!

International Dot Day Artwork! The 3/4 artists created eye-catching Zentangle dots using paper, colorful cellophane sheets, and sharpies. This project required precision cutting and good concentration while drawing small, intricate designs on the cellophane sheets. These unique dots adorn Libby’s office and brighten the room 🙂 Next, artists participated in a school-wide Dot Day collaborative… Read more Art!

3/4 Math the Week of 9/18

We focused our learning this week on translating words into multiplication numerical expressions, and relating multiplication to division.  We used the term “inverse operations” to relate addition to subtraction and multiplication to division.  We challenged our fluency during 3 of the 4 math center stations on Tuesday, and supported our conceptual understanding of division (using… Read more 3/4 Math the Week of 9/18

Global Studies Kick Off at Lake Champlain Maritime Museum!

This week the 3/4 class kicked off our Global Studies unit with a trip to the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum.  Kris and Matt from LCMM went above and beyond in crafting a 2 hour exploration of early human life for our students.  The class transported their backpacks on a sledge, made fire with bow drills,… Read more Global Studies Kick Off at Lake Champlain Maritime Museum!

Kicking off our Project on Evolution!

This week in STEM, the 3/4 class kicked off their first project, on evolution. The driving question for this project is, “how can we design an organism that has evolved to adapt to its environment?” Throughout the project we will explore evolution, adaptations, and what our evidence for evolution is, including homologous structures and the… Read more Kicking off our Project on Evolution!
